INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

I am comfortable diagnosing and treating anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT); I cannot prescribe or recommend medications as I am not a medical doctor.

ACT
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a treatment approach that aims to:
1) inspire acceptance of a client’s emotions
2) encourage client’s to act with the emotions.

For example, anxiety is common when presented with some form of danger; however, if we have that same anxiety with no danger, we can identify a problem.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy would encourage a client to identify the uncomfortable feeling in the body; and notice the feeling is uncomfortable, but not debilitating (i.e. Accept the feeling). Some techniques, such as breathing techniques, can assist with the uncomfortable feelings. Acting with the anxiety is important. Slowing down if one has to, but keep going.

As you can probably tell, I am a fan of ACT.

CBT
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has an element of cognition, or thinking, about ways to change or improve behavior, emotions and thoughts. CBT is a more traditional form of talk therapy that aims to identify problems and work toward solutions to the problems.

For example, a therapist using CBT may ask an
open ended question like “How is worrying about the past helpful?” After listening to the response, the therapist may ask the client to identify a few productive activities the client can try.
